How to Save Money on Boneless Chicken Breast

Similar cheap, affordable recipes: Chicken, Tips

Our family uses chicken breasts probably in over 50% of the meals we cook. Boneless chicken breasts are great because they can be used in wide variety of recipes, they are easy to cook even when partially frozen, they contain little fat, and kids love chicken. The only problem we’ve found with boneless chicken breast is the cost. Many times I’ve seen a package of boneless skinless breasts containing 3 breasts at the grocery store selling for close to $7.00. At this price, it can get pricey to use boneless chicken breasts several times a week. You can also get a bulk bag of chicken breasts or tenders from the grocery store for a reasonable price, but the chicken is a much much lower quality, and if you take the time to cook a home-made recipe, you won’t want to spoil it using poor quality, fatty chicken.

My wife and I always get the quality chicken, the kind you see selling for $6-7 dollars apice, however, we never pay over $3.00 for a package. Here are our 2 best secrets for getting quality chicken at very low prices.

  1. Sales! We have 2 major grocery stores near our house – Cub Foods and Rainbow Foods. We have noticed that about once every month, the Rainbow Foods near our house has a sale on chicken, reducing the price over 60%. This means chicken that would normally cost nearly $7.00 a package only costs about $2.50. At times, we have gone to Rainbow during this sale and bought as many as 12 packages of chicken at one time, not spending over $30.00 total, and giving us enough chicken to last for weeks. Also, the Cub Foods store near our house commonly has sales such as 2 for 1 on chicken breasts. Sales like this are a great way to keep stocked up on chicken. The key is buying as much as possible while it’s at a discounted price. Even if it seems like a lot of money to spend $30 up front buying 10-12 packs of chicken, the amount of money you will ultimately save is astonishing. Best of all, you will be likely to choose chicken breast more often for your dinner plans, a healthy alternative to cheaper meats like ground beef. All you have to do is keep your eyes open for sales. All stores offer a weekly advertisement showcasing sales. We get both stores’ ads sent directly to our house. You can also easily check online as well.
  2. Discount Warehouses. When my wife and I were living in Florida for over a year, we were much less familiar with the local grocery stores. We were also dealing with a baby, and needed a way to get more affordable prices on baby products, meat, and fresh produce. We decided to get a membership to Sam’s Club. The membership costed around $60.00 for 1 year and took only a few minutes to sign up. Right away, we noticed the incredible savings we could take advantage of on many products we bought frequently. Chicken breast alone is a good reason to get a membership to Sam’s Club or Costco. Instead of buying 1 package of chicken breasts, containing about 3 breasts for $6 – 7.00, you can buy a bulk package of chicken breasts. The bulk package contains the same kind of chicken breasts you see in any grocery store, the difference being they contain about 10-12 chicken breasts, and cost about $12.00 per package. We would buy 1 or 2 of these bulk packages and when we got home, seperate the breasts out into individual ziploc bags to freeze (you can also pick up ziploc bags cheap at Sam’s Club). By using this method, you can quickly make up the cost of the membership in savings, and you can also take advantage of other great deals. Almost all meats are considerably cheaper at Sam’s Club. Especially roasts, fish and sausage. You can also pick up fresh produce in bulk for far less.

By taking either of these 2 steps, you can be on your way to huge savings on chicken breast a healthier lifestyle!
