Mexican Spice BlendHave you ever had “Taco Night” at your house? You probably picked up some meat, tortillas, beans, cheese…and one of those little packages of Taco Seasoning. My wife and I used to do this all the time. The taco seasoning blends are easy to use, make your tacos very flavorful and they are inexpensive. Unfortunately, they are also packed with sodium, msg and other additives. The great thing is, you can easily make your own delicious taco seasoning blend, packed with all the great flavors you’re used to enjoying in a taco, and without all the nasty additives. Here are the basic ingredients I use when creating my spice blend.

  • 2 Parts Chili Powder
  • 2 Parts Ground Cumin
  • 2 Parts Garlic Powder
  • 1 Part Onion Powder
  • 1 Part Oregano
  • 1 Part Paprika
  • 1 Part Coriander
  • Salt
  • Pepper

You can make enough for one dish, or make a large batch for easy reuse. The best part about this blend is the versatility. You can omit or add ingredients to taste – for example, if you aren’t having onions with your tacos, add an extra part onion powder. Don’t have any coriander? Just add some fresh cilantro as a garnish instead, or omit all together. You can also increase the amounts on your favorite spices to add even more flavor.

Once you’re ready to cook the tacos, using the blend is easy. Just brown the ground beef, ground turkey, or diced chicken breasts. Drain off the grease, stir in the spices and add about 2/3 cup water (eyeball it). Then bring to a boil, and reduce to a simmer for about 5-10 minutes.

This recipe is also great for other mexican recipes, chili, or soups and stews. Also could be used as a dry rub for meats.
